WHAT IS WELDED MESH AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR? weld wire mesh

Mesh has a number of uses within construction. Notably reinforcement in concrete structures, paved roads, masonry, and fencing. As you can imagine, this serves a diverse range of industries as well, such as agricultural, transportation, horticultural, mining, gardening, and machine protection. Read on further as we take a look at what welded mesh is and how it is used in these different sectors.

WELDED WIRE MESH

What is Welded Mesh?

So, what exactly is this welded mesh stuff and why should it be important to me? Well, you see welded mesh is a huge part of many projects for both residential and commercial purposes. Though processed in different ways, welded mesh is when you take galvanized steel wires and intertwine them so that they have equal spacing and weld them into place. This also makes them greatly customizable to your project requirements.

The Galvanization Methods of Welded Mesh

There are a few types of welded mesh that are made in different ways and then used in different applications. Here we are going to explore the different types of welded mesh and in sections further on look at their uses.

  • Hot Dipped Galvanized Welded Mesh

When you use the hot dipped method to galvanize mesh you are creating a chemical bond between the steel of wire and the zinc from the hot dip. The process is fairly simple. The steel is first cleaned with sodium hydroxide to remove debris, oils, and dirt. Then any contaminants, rust or other surface issues are removed with an acidic solution. Once that is done the steel is coated with an ammonium chloride cleaning agent to prevent oxidation. Now for the fun part where the steel is dipped into molten zinc and then rapidly cooled in a special chamber. Making a tough scratch resistant zinc-steel alloy coating.

  • Electro Galvanized Welded Mesh

This process is a little different and uses a cold process instead. Once you have a clean steel surface to work with an organic solvent created with zinc particles is applied. A reaction takes place by where the zinc binds with the steel and the solvent evaporates, creating a hardened zinc-steel alloy coating. Leaving you with a softer material to work with.

What are Common Uses for Welded Mesh?

Welded mesh is a highly versatile and durable material that is resistant to corrosion, making it ideal in both large- and small-scale projects where reliability and longevity is needed. Here are some of common applications for welded mesh:

  • Retaining walls
  • Road foundations
  • Food procurement
  • Fencing
  • Canals
  • Swimming pools
  • Concrete floor
